42. Do you remember the first family reunion you ever went to?
I've picked number 42! My family is pretty big on reunions, my grandparents even hosted one. I remember going to reunions where great-great aunts were still alive. My great-grandmother and her siblings lost a brother to Scarlet Fever when they were children, and at their reunions they would still talk about him. My parents won a great knitted blanket from one of the great-great aunts at one reunion.
Throughout my entire childhood and adolescence, my family would travel between Texas, Colorado, Kansas, and Alabama for family reunions.
The first reunion that I remember going to was in the mid-1990s. My grandparents, my parents, my aunt, my sister and I went to Colorado. I can't remember if we rode together or separately. I remember taking a small blue suitcase that had dinosaurs on the front. I kept my Barbie's and their clothes in that suitcase. We stayed at some kind of lodge. I think that my grandparents stayed in their motorhome. |
I remember my parents taking us "fishing" - except we didn't catch anything, but I'm pretty sure that I got a hook stuck in my by an overzealous cousin.
Looking back at it, and the consistent tradition of family reunions of the Watt and Cobb families, I wonder how of my ancestors I ran around as a child, not even realizing the history that they had seen or experienced in their lives! My grandfather is planning on hosting the next Watt family reunion. He is now the oldest person in the family, and as I watch the little ones run around ( as they do at every reunion) I can't help but think that one day they will have the same thoughts that I do about their ancestors.
