Jabez Thurman and Nancy Tipton
Jabez Thurman was born in Bedford, Virginia on Christmas Day in 1794. He married Nancy Tipton in Knoxville Tennessee. They had eleven children: Nancy (1820-), Patrick (1822), William (1823-), Joseph (1823-), Esther (1824-), Preston (1829-), Rueben (1830-), Mary Ann (1831-), James (1832), Henry (1839-), and John Tyler (1841-). Nancy died around 1845 and Jabez remarried, this time to a woman named Ally Tipton on June 4, 1846 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Joseph Thurman and Mary Dusenbury
Joseph Thurman married Jane Duesenbury on February 1, 1848 in Jasper, Missouri.1 He is listed on the Texas, U.S. Muster Roll as a horse Ferrier. He enlisted in Denton county for 12 months when he was forty-one.
Joseph Thurman and his three sons, Bill, Sam, and Jess settled an area along the Nieces River. The population was limited and according to Texas Escapes, Joseph Thurman was a dentist, doctor, and coffin maker (his son Jesse would also become a coffin maker).1 The settlement was called the Kickapoo Settlement because of the Kickapoo. This photograph, submitted by William Beauchamp to the Texas Escapes magazine shows the Henze Post office, which was also located on Joseph Thurman's ranch. There was a massive flood in the area in 1935 and the small community was devastated by it. Joseph and Mary had the following children: William (1844-1929), Sarah (1846-) Margaret (1848-1926), Mary (1852-1938), and Jesse (1857-1933), Samuel (1859-), and Adale (1871-). William (Bill) married Effie Johnson (1843-1909) and after her death, married Janie Shipman (1877-1918). They had the following children: Laura (1864-1948), Joe (1866-1926), William (1875-1907), Mattie (1881-1920), Samuel (1884-1952), Jesse (1885-1958), Janie (1889-1966), and James (1890-1942). Margaret married Manning Davis (1840-1895). They had the following children: Albert (1866-1924), Samuel (1872-1910), Hiram (1875-1942), Jesse (1879-1946), William (1881-1957), John (1884-1942), Sally (1884-1977), Martin (1888-1973), and Wesley (1890-1946). Mary was married to Elbert Free and more information can be found about her on the Free family page, Jesse married Lillie Cox on Christmas Day 1890.
