Thomas Hooten and Margaret Reedy
Thomas Wesley Hooten was forty-nine years old when he provided information for the 1900 census. He told the census taker that he'd been born in July of 1850, in Georgia. His parents, though, were both from South Carolina. Thomas told the census taker that he'd wed his bride, Margaret Reedy, in 1871. One wonders if Thomas realized that he was mistaken regarding his wedding date. Per his marriage license, he married Margaret Reedy December 13, 1870.1
He was a farmer by trade, and owned his land in Taylor, Texas. Listed on the 1900 census was Thomas's wife, Margaret, who as forty-eight at the time. His twenty-six year old son, Thomas (1874-1929), was living with them then. So was their sixteen year old daughter, Connie(1883-), their nine year old daughter, Minnie (1890-), and their three year old daughter, Lydia (1896-1997). Their daughter, Margaret (1786-) was not listed on the 1900 census.
Ten years later, in 1910, the family was living in Howard County and had a mortgaged farm. Again, Thomas told the census worker that he was a farmer. He had attended school in his life and he was able to read and write. The only child living in the house at the time was thirteen year old Lydia. Thomas died on January 2, 1929 of dropsy or edema - a swelling under the skin. This was secondary to the mitral insufficiency (mitral valve regurgitation) in which the blood of his heart back flowed into a valve.2 Margaret died on April 17, 1937 of heart failure at the age of eighty-four.3 |
Thomas William Hooten died on January 8, 1929 - days after his father died - of emphysema with pneumonia as a secondary cause.4 He was fifty-four years old.
Lydia married Alvis Knappe. More information can be found about her on the Knappe page.
