Robert Witherspoon and Flora Bridges
Robert Witherspoon was born in Scotland in 1690. He was the son of James (1640-1691) and Helen Welch Witherspoon (1644-). He married Flora Bridges (1699). They had at least one child, John Robert (1720-). John Robert was born in Pennsylvania. His spouse is unknown, but they had at least one child: John William Witherspoon (1756-1843).
John William and Margaret Carson
John William married an unknown woman and they had four daughters: Margaret Elizabeth (1785-1844), Elizabeth (1788-1866), Esther (1789-1870), and Mary (Polly).
John then married Margaret Carson (1777- 1842).1 She was his second wife. They had the following children: James (1799-1862), Moses (1801-), Rebecca (1804-), William (1807-), Ann (1809-1850), John (1812-1855), Jackson (1815-1850), and Lemuel (1819-1874). Margaret married John Hamilton on February 2, 1844 in Marion, Tennessee.2 Elizabeth married Isaac Woods on September 7, 1803 in Blount, Tennessee.3 |
James (1799-1862) married Maria Wilson in Vanderburgh, Indiana on December 25, 1836.4 The 1840 census shows that the family lived in Scott, Indiana. The 1850 census indicates that James was born in Tennessee and he was a farmer by trade. The census lists the following children in the household: Lemuel (1838), Martin (1842), Granville (1843), Elija (1845), Benjamin (1847), and Sarah Elizabeth (1850).
Moses Carson Witherspoon (1801-) married Betsy Gibson on August 15, 1822 in Morgan County, Alabama.5 In 1835, he obtained land in Gibson County, Indiana. He deposited the certificate of register at the General Land Office in Vincennes, Indiana and made full payment. President Andrew Jackson signed the document.6

Rebecca married James McAllister on December 8, 1823 in Morgan, Alabama.7 The 1850 census shows the family living in Cuivre, Missouri. The children listed on the census were: Elizabeth (1830-), Daniel (1832-), John (1834-), David (1840-), and Martha (1842-). By 1870 their family was living in Louisiana, Missouri, per the census. Like her brother James, Rebecca had been born in Tennessee.
William Patterson Witherspoon, born in Tennessee, married Permelia Berlin in Gibson, Indiana on October 23, 1833.8 The children listed on the 1850 and 1870 census records were Lewis (1840-), James (1841-), Sarah (1845-), William (1848-), Willoby (1852-1931), Kasaouth (1854-), and Zillah (1858-). Their son, Moses, not listed on these two documents, was born on in 1836 and died in 1924.9
Ann married Robert Wallis on January 4, 1837 in Gibson, Indiana.10
John Martin married Artemisia Montgomery on December 1, 1832.11 The 1850 census shows his birth in Tennessee. The children listed on the census are Jane (1833-), William (1839-), Thomas (1842-), Sarah (1844-), and Indiana (1847-). At the time of the 1860 census he and his family were living in Princeton, Indiana. His second marriage was to Elizabeth LaGrange on August 24, 1871.12
Jackson married Elizabeth Teel in 1837 in Gibson County, Indiana.13 They had a son, William (1838-1902).12 Mary Jane Dougan on March 13, 1845 in Indiana.14 By the time of the 1850 census the family had two sons: Isaac (1846-) and John (1849-).
Lemuel married Violet Ann on April 29, 1840 in Indiana. 15 Per the 1860 census the family was living in Columbia, Indiana. Lemuel, like his siblings, had been born in Tennessee. The children listed on the census were: Mary (1843-), Nancy (1845-), Moses (1847-), Martha (1849-), Margaret (1851-), Henry (1856-), and Julia (1858-). Son, John (1867-), was listed on the 1870 census. Another daughter, Elizabeth (1842-), was listed on the 1850 census.
Esther Witherspoon and David Woods
Esther married David Woods; she was the mother of Isaac Woods (1817-1882).
