Ulrich Zug and Barbara Bachman
Ulrich Zug was born in 1659 in Heidelberg, Germany. He married Barbara Bachman, who had been born in 1699 - she was forty years his junior. Both Barbara and Ulrich had been born in Zug, a German-speaking Swiss city. The city’s name, and perhaps Ulrich’s surname, originated from a medieval phrase in which it “referred to the right to ‘pull up’ fishing nets and hence the right to fish.” 1
