John Free and Elizabeth Moore
John Free was born in South Carolina. He was a blacksmith in the Crane Hill area of Arkansas. His wife, Elizabeth, had been born in Kentucky. John and Elizabeth Free had nine children: Elbert (1841-), Nancy , James ( 1844-), Emery (1846-), John (1848-), Luilla (1851-), Walker (1853-), Frank (1855-), and Hugh (1857).1
James Free joined the Confederate Army on June 16, 1862. He would later desert the Confederacy and join the Union. He died March 21, 1863.

Elbert Free and Mary Thurman Elbert Free was born June 1, 1841 in Washington County, Arkansas to John Free and his wife Elizabeth. He married Mary Thurman on February 10, 1867 in Ellis County, Texas.1
They had the following children: Jane (1867-), Mary (1867-1939), Sarah (1870-), Joseph (1871-1893), Maggie (1872-1967), James (1879-1939), John (1880-1962), Ora (1883-1974). Mary Free applied for a confederate pension after Elbert's death. The pension application identified Elbert as a an individual who served the "Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and that he did not desert the Confederate Service." She goes on in the same document to identify Elbert as having enlisted in 1861 and served until his discharge in 1865 at Clarksville, Arkansas. He was in the Co. E. First Battalion Arkansas Cavalry and was a non-commissioned Corporal. 2 The U.S. Confederate Soldiers Complied Service Records indicate that he was a Sergeant.3 Jane married John Bolding (1859-1922) in 1881.4 Jane was thirteen when she married John (who was twenty-two). The newspaper article in the Fort Worth Telegram in 1915 is about Jane (mis-named Emma here) and her first child. They had the following children: Lela (1882-1975), Mary (1884-1898), Margaret (1885-1958), Jessie (1888-1890), James (1890-1975), John (1895-1909), and William (1900-1965). |
Sarah married Robert Rutherford (1859-1938). They had the following children: Arthur (1886-1972), Carrel (1888-1954), Ada (1890-1938), Minnie (1892-1927), Ola (1894-1957), Bulah (1896-1918), Herman (1900-1947), George (1903-1967), and Richard (1907-1958).
Joseph did not marry. He died when he was twenty-one years old.
Margaret married David Perdue (1872-1940) and had the following children: Lola (1891-1891), Ethel (1893-1948), Lelia (1895-1988), Andrew (1898-1980), Barnes (1906-1980), Virginia (1910-1981), Claudie (1913-1974), and David (1916-1991).
James married Mattie Strain (1877-1965) and they had the following children: Jim Opal (1901-1973) and Elbert (1908-1954).
John married Nettie (Jewel) Trout (1889-1985). They had the following children: Deering (1913-2001) and Lena (1916-2001).
