This image is a tintype. Tintypes were most often used in the 1860s and 1870s. The woman in this image below is my fourth great-grandmother and one of her children. I remember the feelings of awe when I first held the tin type in my hand. I couldn't believe the detailing on this baby that had been captured on the metal. I could so clearly see all of those little toes on that right foot, that puckered little brow, and the smiling look of the wee babe's mother staring at that sweet little head. Seeing them come to life on that tintype was an amazing moment in my research - and I can just imagine the year that she held it in her own hands.
